7 Ways To Enhance Your Wining and Dining Experience

As the festive season approaches you’ll be strapping on those high heels and reaching for that tweed jacket even more. Here are seven tips for accentuating your wining and dining experience when attending your next Christmas lunch, end of year dinner party or social gathering this December and January.

1. Sharing Food Is Much Better For Conversations

Food is at the heart and soul of our social construct and determines how, when, where and why people socialise. It’s only natural then for people to feel more comfortable in social settings if they are sharing their food experience. Share platters like Charcuterie Boards, Cheese Boards and Pork Sliders are a great way to start your lunch or dinner as it helps deconstruct routine and encourages people to start conversations about food.

2. Try Food You Wouldn’t Cook At Home

Humans express themselves best when they are out of their comfort zone. Experimenting with food is an ideal way to increase individual enjoyment as the only way to determine your distaste for something is by trying new things. And generally, if you do like something — you will share it with the friends. Besides, what’s the point of paying good money for something you can cook yourself? Broaden your culinary horizons and enjoy the adventure. CHECK OUT THE DRIFT DINING AND BAR MENU

3. Put The Phone On Silent

Embrace the occasion and spend time with the people around you. Enjoy the experience and get the most out of it. Let the food and wine be the centre of your conversation, not some ‘Snapchat’ or ‘WhatsApp’ video.

4. Take Your Time

Enjoy your dining experience from beginning to end. You are there to catch up with people, or to do business, so let the conversation flow. Order your entrée, main and dessert separately. Too often people arrive, order, eat, pay and leave. What’s the point? Take you time and get the most out you lunch or dinner.

5. Be flexible and explore

Don’t be sceptical. A perfectly matched wine will increase the sensation of the food. And if you have no idea, simply ask your waiter to expertly match the tannins of the wine with your meal. It will not only increase conversation among your table, but you’ll leave with new knowledge and a reason to come back. Check out Drift Dining and Bar’s monthly UNCORKED or DECANTED sessions which invite guests to experience popular wine regions from around the world and to learn how food can alter their perception of a wine.

6. Have A Different Wine With Each Course

If your entrée, main and dessert creates differing sensations, why shouldn’t your wine do the same? Try selecting various types of red, white and dessert wines to compliment the varying tastes of your food. As humans we only realise what we do and don’t like by experimenting, so next time give it a go. What’s the worse that could happen?

7. Finish Your Meal With Either A Port, Sherry Or Dessert Wine

How many times have you asked for a Solera 1847 Cream by Gonzalez Byass to accompany your Chocolate Ganache? Probably never! Continue your experience by ordering a bottle of port, sherry or dessert wine. How do you know you won’t like it? Of course, the selection will depend on the type dessert you order — but instead of rushing off and paying the bill, savour the moment and enjoy the perfect conclusion to your night.
