Penfolds: Shaping Australian Wine
Australia has found its niche in exporting premium-branded wines that have proven highly competitive on the international export market. So much so, Australia is now the fourth largest producer of wine in the world exporting over 400 million litres annually and not only rivals France as the number one exporter of wine to the United Kingdom, but has had huge success in Asia due to the region’s increasingly popular wine-drinking culture.
A major player in this boom has been the emergence of Penfolds as an internationally recognisable premium brand, thanks in part to the award-winning Penfolds Grange which is widely regarded as Australia’s most famous wine.
You only need to step foot into bottle-shops and restaurants across Europe, North America and Asia to learn of Penfolds global appeal.
From its inaugural days as one of South Australia’s earliest estates during the 1840s, its emergence as the nation’s most iconic producer in the 1950s and its current reputation as an international best-seller, Penfolds truly holds a significant place in Australian viticulture.

And it’s not just Penfolds Grange that has wowed wine lovers. Mid range wines such as Penfolds Bin and Koonunga labels have fed off the success of Grange and are equally popular and more affordable for everyday wine drinkers.
Penfolds chief winemaker Peter Gago says the success is a result of a conscious effort to brand Penfolds as a premium wine producer and to meet international demand for Australian wine.
“The global awareness of Penfolds is high and rising due to a proactive push to promote it and the willingness of consumers around the world to pay a premium for our high-quality South Australian red wines,” he told The Adelaide Advertiser recently.
To educate and share this great brand with the people of Kuala Lumpur, Drift Dining and Bar is hosting our monthly Decanted wine tasting night featuring six amazing Penfolds wines highlighted by a guest appearance from Penfolds Southeast Asia ambassador Patrick Dowling.
