5 tips to avoid the post-festive season blues

The first week after the holiday season. It’s unbearable for most. Christmas has passed, New Year has gone by in a flash and now you’re back at work with a hole in your wallet and a few extra kilos to your waist.

Sure, you’ve had a great time celebrating and partying with family and friends, and by gosh was it worth it — those benders were epic, and what about that hot guy or girl you met at the bar? OR just spending time with that special someone.

But as you sit at your desk contemplating what lay ahead in 2016, you can’t help but feel trapped in a cocoon. Your New Year’s Eve resolutions are a distant reality and the concept of FUN seems a million miles away.

Well, the good news is, it’s not all doom and gloom. Here are five tips for brightening your new year and shaking off those post-festive season blues.

[if !supportLists]1. [endif]Make your New Year resolutions about people, not material items.

If you’re a compulsive resolution maker — and no people, giving up chocolate doesn’t count — you’re probably across the latest fads, diets and health-kicks for 2016. So for those a little more philosophical, why not task yourself with becoming a better person? In 2015, a friend of mine actually set himself the goal of having dinner with at least one friend each week for 52 weeks. His reason: “They were friends at one stage in your life. Don’t wait for them to contact you. Make the time and effort to see those who matter the most.” Wise words. Sharing happy moments with friends, both old and new, will create long-term memories and will be more rewarding.

[if !supportLists]2. [endif]Continue to treat yourself, happiness is not bound by time.

Who’s to say spending large and having a good time should be restricted to Christmas and New Year. Of course, your bank balance may say otherwise, but every now and then be free and spoil yourself. And if you can share those experiences with your mates, you’ll feel even better.[if gte vml 1]><v:shapetype id="_x0000_t75" coordsize="21600,21600" o:spt="75" o:preferrelative="t" path="m@4@5l@4@11@9@11@9@5xe" filled="f" stroked="f"> <v:stroke joinstyle="miter"></v:stroke> <v:formulas> <v:f eqn="if lineDrawn pixelLineWidth 0"></v:f> <v:f eqn="sum @0 1 0"></v:f> <v:f eqn="sum 0 0 @1"></v:f> <v:f eqn="prod @2 1 2"></v:f> <v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelWidth"></v:f> <v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelHeight"></v:f> <v:f eqn="sum @0 0 1"></v:f> <v:f eqn="prod @6 1 2"></v:f> <v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelWidth"></v:f> <v:f eqn="sum @8 21600 0"></v:f> <v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelHeight"></v:f> <v:f eqn="sum @10 21600 0"></v:f> </v:formulas> <v:path o:extrusionok="f" gradientshapeok="t" o:connecttype="rect"></v:path> <o:lock v:ext="edit" aspectratio="t"></o:lock> </v:shapetype><v:shape id="officeArt_x0020_object" o:spid="_x0000_s1028" type="#_x0000_t75" style='position:absolute;margin-left:-.45pt;margin-top:13.95pt; width:336.95pt;height:224.45pt;z-index:251659264;visibility:visible; mso-wrap-style:square;mso-wrap-distance-left:12pt;mso-wrap-distance-top:12pt; mso-wrap-distance-right:12pt;mso-wrap-distance-bottom:12pt; mso-position-horizontal:absolute;mso-position-horizontal-relative:margin; mso-position-vertical:absolute;mso-position-vertical-relative:line' wrapcoords="-3 0 -3 21595 21594 21595 21594 0 -3 0" strokeweight="1pt"> <v:stroke miterlimit="4"></v:stroke> <v:imagedata src="file://localhost/Users/macintosh/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/msoclip/0/clip_image001.jpg" o:title=""></v:imagedata> <w:wrap type="through" anchorx="margin" anchory="line"></w:wrap> </v:shape><![endif][if !vml][endif]

[if !supportLists]3. [endif]Try something new and experiment.

January and February is the perfect time to let your senses free and be exotic in your choices. Whether it’s wining, dining or travel, get out of your comfort zone and test your outer limits. Who knows what it is you actually like until you experiment and broaden your horizons! These new sensations will give you something to look forward each day at work.

[if !supportLists]4. [endif]Mix in different circles and meet new people.

As we get older we feel more comfortable with the people we know. We lose that brashness of youth and are content with people we mix with. This year, why not attend parties, events and social evenings outside your norm? You are sure to meet new people and share in new experiences.

Events to look out for at Drift Dining and Bar in 2016 include our Uncorked and Decanted wine evenings, whiskey and beer tastings.

Interested to host your own tasting, enquire about our bespoke group tastings for you and friends or your next event.

[if !supportLists]5. [endif]Spend your money in different ways.

Let’s face it we’re all creatures of habit. And generally that’s what’s so great about Christmas and New Year. We get to enjoy things we rarely experience. So instead of stewing over work, spice up your life and spend your money in ways you wouldn’t normally. Order a cocktail, invite your boss out for lunch, go on more dates, socialise on a Monday, go to an interactive cooking class, take your friends to an event or go wine and whisky tasting. Whatever it is, variety is the key to happiness.
