7 Do’s and Don’ts of Valentine’s Day

Love is complicated enough let alone having an entire day devoted to it. As we close in on Feb 14, whether you’re hitched, single or hopelessly confused, let’s explore some of the do’s and awkward don’ts of Valentine’s Day.

1. Is being single on Valentine’s Day all that bad? Of course not! Show some love to the people who truly matter to you. DO head out with your best friend and enjoy some fabulous drinks or a great meal and celebrate something meaningful. You won’t have time to feel sorry that way!

2. If you’re going to take a gamble on ‘someone special’ this Valentine’s Day, DO contemplate doing something crazy and out of the ordinary. Take time to write a sweet note, put together a card made out of newspapers clippings. Even write a song? She’ll love your ingenuity and will give you points for trying.

3. Ladies, if you’re hoping for Prince Charming to sweep you off your feet this Valentine’s Day, remember guys aren’t that smart. They will not spend all day planning a romantic evening. If you are a strong and assertive woman and know what you want — DO tell him! “We should go to dinner babe!”, “Oooh I like those flowers”. Guys love hints.

4. Should you buy a gift? Well it depends. If you’re in a long-term relationship you’ll probably get in more trouble if you don’t. But if you’re on a first date or trying to impress a girl, DO give her something creative, kinky or quirky. It’s always going to get more laughs than a three day old flower. DO NOT get carried away though. Gag gifts are only as good as your cheek and charm, so avoid anything rude and crude.

5. Are you the kind that get’s nervous on a first date and indulge in a few too many glasses of wine or spirits? If so, DO NOT get wasted. Sloppy dates are no fun and actually more awkward than if you are sober. DO have fun and lighten the mood with a drink or too, but rein it in and stay in control. First impressions are everything.

After all sharing food is a great conversation starter. Guys may like to eat your extras, but they also like a girl who can finish their meal and top it off with a drink.

7. Just because you’ve agreed to keep the night casual, there’s no excuse for not dressing well and being polite. Fellas, DO keep it simple. DO look respectable. DO be charming and DO be chivalrous. Opening doors and letting her in first is a fool proof plan for winning her heart. “It’s the thought that counts”! Well, to an extent. Random acts of affection are a great way to impress a girl. Calling in a marching band to play ‘Love Is In The Air’ is perhaps a step too far. Remember honest, funny and heartfelt is great. Corny, desperate and overwhelming is not. Find the balance and DO enjoy each other’s company.
