3 Team Building Activities To Reward Your Staff

A recent study by the University of Warwick (UK) has found employee happiness leads to a 12 per cent spike in workplace productivity, while unhappy workers prove 10 per cent less productive. If we really need numbers to convince us this is true, it probably indicates why much of the professional sector measures individual worth by numbers and not quality. (Which is another issue altogether). But the fact that employee satisfaction goes hand in hand with increased worker efficiency, still rings true.
Most adult workers are dissatisfied by their place of employment and will do anything to break those shackles. That’s where employers, managers and CEOs can increase their efforts to create a better working environment. Not only will productivity increase but so too their employees’ capacity to think creatively and effectively — a byproduct of greater trust, freedom, responsibility. So how do you create that culture?
Social activities outside of the office are a great way to cultivate happiness and if they occur within work hours, those benefits are even greater. Here are three team building activities to inspire your colleagues throughout the year.

Happy Hour
The term ‘work hard, play hard’ may seem trivial; perhaps even at odds with staff performance. But if monitored correctly it can be a great way to boost staff output. Casual drinks within/outside work hours not only provides an escape — or more correctly an avenue to switch off — but fosters employee relationships and values that mould individuals into a well-oiled team.
Some people may actually like their role and responsibility at work but loathe that colleague who is not a team player. Happy Hour drinks are great way to bring team members together, allow employees to share intimate details about each other and even break stereotypes and certain perceptions of individuals.

Most companies wait until Friday, but why stick to the norm? Try it on a Monday or Tuesday! People love something new and when you get out of your comfort zone you tend to open up more. And remember, alcohol doesn’t need to flow for people to have fun. Those who don’t drink should be encouraged just the same. It’s all about the team and bringing people together in a fun environment.

Come down and enjoy Happy Hour at Drift Dining and Bar every day from 4pm to 7pm. Buy 1 beer, cocktail and select glass of wine and you’ll get one FREE.
Long Lunch
Yes, we’ll admit long lunches are not an option for everyone — often reserved for the bankers, lawyers and executives of the world. But who’s to say you can’t treat your team as well? And if you are considering it, change it up and make it into something unique. Instead of going to the local Chinese restaurant across the road, hire a mini-van or grab an Uber and go on a mini-excursion to a secret location. It will make your staff feel more valued.

Sharing platters are perfect for this as it gets people talking about the food rather than work. And make it phone free event, too. What’s the point of rewarding your staff with a nice lunch if half of them are occupied by answering emails? Again this doesn’t need to be a boozy affair. Let the food be the focal point of the event and share in the experience of new tastes and flavours. Your staff will feel refreshed and more confident to take on the corporate world.
Try something new
It’s like Groundhog Day! Every Friday after work, George will round up a posse for drinks. There’s only one problem; it’s at the same old dingy bar. You want to be involved but you just can’t stand that place. As manager, why don’t you take the initiative and invite your team to try something new.
Trampoline parks and paintball venues are an ideal place for getting the team together and having some fun. Locations such as Jump Street in Petaling Jaya and Xtion Paintball Park in Bukit Jalil can cater for product launches, corporate functions, company-wide family and sports days and inter-departmental dodgeball tournaments where your team can unwind, relax and make a fool of themselves — perfect for creating an honest, dynamic team environment.
If you want to treat your staff to something more classier, wine and whisky tastings are a great alternative where everyone will feel welcomed — and not just like an after work ‘boys’ club. Plus your team will get to expand their knowledge on how to match wine and food and the ageing process of different whiskies. You’ll not only have a great time, but you’ll show to your team that you truly care about them.
Drift Dining and Bar has monthly wine and whisky tasting events. Check out our January wine tasting evening with Penfolds wines here:
