Are you planning a holiday to Kuala Lumpur? Maybe you’re visiting friends and want to be close to all the action? Here’s our guide to the best places to stay in town for food and nightlife.

KL City Line

BUKIT BINTANG & KLCC

Renowned as KL’s trendiest entertainment district, Bukit Bintang offers a variety of places to eat, sleep and explore the nightlife. Thanks to its central location it is also ideal for those wanting to explore famous landmarks around KLCC such as Petronas Twin Towers, KL Tower, Aquaria KLCC and Suria KLCC Shopping Mall as well as Bukit Bintang’s famed Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and Changkat — home to KL’s best bars, clubs and street food. There’s also easy access to public transport including monorail, buses and taxis.

The 5-star Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur provides some of the largest and spacious hotel rooms in the city with panoramic views of KL’s skyline. It includes 370 guest rooms and 42 suites as well as three restaurants, a spa, a fitness centre and swimming pool.

What we recommend: Marini’s On 57 is KL’s highest rooftop bar also featuring an Italian restaurant and whisky and cigar lounge. It is located adjacent to Petronas Twin Towers, so the views are amazing.

PARKROYAL Serviced Suites offer an affordable, yet luxurious stay with rooms as cheap as $100 per night. There are one and two bedroom apartments, executive suites and a selection of 287 studios.

What we recommend: Just 50 metres from the PARKROYAL and around the corner from Drift Dining and Bar is KL’s premier jazz club, No Black Tie, which is home to an array of international and local acts. Next door is Spanish and Peruvian tapas bar, Pisco, with live DJ’s on Fridays and Saturdays.

The Journal Hotel is a new, stylish boutique hotel in the heart of Bukit Bintang, just minutes from Changkat and Pavillion. It offers an affordable alternative to the more lavish 5-star options in the area.

Pavilion KL

What we recommend: Jalan Alor off Changkat Bukit Bintang is foodie-central with Chinese seafood restaurants and hawker stalls selling an array of local delicacies and international cuisines until the wee hours of the morning.

For budget travellers, there is a host of backpacker accommodation in and around Changkat with single rooms as cheap as RM45-50 and dorms beds priced at around RM20.

KL SENTRAL, MID VALLEY & BANGSAR

About 15 minutes away on the west side of the city is KL Sentral and Mid Valley — perfect portals to access KL’s popular nightspot Bangsar. KL Sentral has a host of luxury hotels often used for business trips due to its proximity to Malaysia’s largest transportation hub and rail access to KLIA airports. The residential neighbourhood of Brickfields, also known as ‘Little India’, is a stone’s throw away from KL Sentral with some of the best curries in the city.

Five minutes down the road is Mid Valley Megamall and The Gardens Mall — the favoured shopping destination for many locals. With Bangsar home to many expatriates and KL’s wealthy, there are a plethora of fine dining and international restaurants to enjoy. Although there are no hotels in Bangsar, there is wide range of options available through https://www.airbnb.com/

The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur is the only hotel in Kuala Lumpur to be included in the Leading Hotels of the World (LHW) luxury hotel collection alongside famous icons such as The Ritz London and The Pierre in New York City. It includes the original Hotel Majestic, which was built in 1932 and is now a national heritage site. There are 47 luxurious suites in the Majestic Wing and 253 guest rooms in the Tower Wing.

What we recommend: If you fancy a classy night out try WIP — once a ‘Work In Progress’, now ‘Whipped Into Place’. Touted as KL’s best-kept secret, WIP offers a selection of Western, Asian and Northern Indian cuisine to match its extensive range of cocktails (particularly its Mojitos), premium champagnes and wines.

The 4-star Ramada Plaza Kuala Lumpur is ideal for business travellers or couples wanting a much-needed holiday. The hotel offers 357 guest rooms and suites plus the usual facilities. Other hotels in the area include Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral and for lower budgets Hotel Metro at Kuala Lumpur and Swiss-Inn Kuala Lumpur.

What we recommend: Chat Masala in Brickfields is within walking distance of KL Sentral and is renowned for its Northern and Southern Indian cuisine. It also specialises in vegetarian dishes — a favourite for many locals.

If you are travelling the world, there are a host of backpacker hostels with beds from as little as RM20 in Chinatown near Petaling Street. Petaling Street is famous for its night market chock-full of shops and stalls selling goods and food.

There are free buses that operate from Chinatown (near Pasar Seni LRT station) to KL Sentral, Mid Valley and Bukit Bintang. Car sharing services GrabCar and Uber are also advised, as they are cheaper and safer than taxis.

Check out Drift Dining and Bar — voted in Time Out KL’s Food 40 best restaurants and cafes in the city — located just across the road from PARKROYAL Serviced Suites on Jalan Bedara behind Istana Hotel.
