Have you ever met a person who doesn’t enjoy drinking wine? Generally, it’s because wine is the one thing most people agree on: a) it’s absolutely awesome and b) no one experience is the same.
You can drink it by yourself to unwind, have it with friends at dinner or explore its finer details at a tasting session. Sure, you will have great memories of one wine in particular, but this only tempts you to be more adventurous and try new things. It’s not about drinking the same wine over and over again, but instead opening up new doors and feeling new sensations.
It’s for that reason — wine’s ability to help create amazing experiences, with amazing people — that Drift Dining and Bar is experiencing overwhelming success with its monthly wine tasting events.
The popularity of wine is booming in Asia with hubs such a Malaysia, Hong Kong and China, in particular, experiencing an increase in their wine imports. And while there are hundreds of venues across Kuala Lumpur serving premium wine, it’s that niche market of being able to share, educate and experience wine with other people that Drift is transforming, with their unique Decanted and Uncorked sessions proving a massive hit.

The formula is simple: collect a group of like-minded people, strategically place some delicious wine on the table, give them a few tips about what makes it interesting, add a sprinkling of random conversation and there you have it, the recipe for a perfect evening.
It’s not merely the people present, nor what is said, nor for that matter the wine itself that makes the experience so great. It’s more the reason why you are there in the first place and the fact you are doing something different, meeting new people, getting out of your comfort zone and having a good time. The wine is simply the mediator of the experience. As the people of KL are are finding out, wine makes everything so much more fun.
Drift’s wine tasting events take you away from the hustle and bustle of city life and bring thought, fun and interest to something that can seem so rigid and formal. These evenings, which have run for over a year, give attendees a chance to buy wine at better than retail price, but more importantly, an opportunity to create memories and stories with friends both new and old.

Each session explores different regions and styles as well as providing an understanding of what to look for in a wine list. We show you the impact food can have on your perception of wine, plus you get exclusive access to wine makers from around the world. And don’t be sceptical, a perfectly matched wine will increase the sensation of the food. That’s why we also have an array of light bites and canapés on show to accompany your wine tasting experience.
Our latest Decanted event was a sell out with Kaesler Wines from Australia showcasing six fantastic varietals from the famed Barossa Valley region near Adelaide. Kaesler Wines representative Sarah MacMahon was on hand to guide the guests on their wine journey, speaking of the unique ability of wine to bring people together.

“It’s great to share wine in an environment like this. Wine becomes part of the story, part of the interaction and if the wine is good, that interaction will continue as people are having an amazing time,” she said.
The tasting menu included the famed 2013 Bogan Shiraz as well as the 2012 Viognier, named in James Halliday’s 5-star 2015 Australian Wine Companion.
