Exploring Kuala Lumpur on foot

Within the concrete jungle that is Kuala Lumpur, there’s a number hidden jewels of nature to explore. The Malaysian capital is also steeped in history, providing the perfect location to venture back in time and peel back traditions and culture. Here’s our top 5 places to walk and explore in KL.
1. KL Lake Gardens
KL Lake Gardens or Perdana Botanical Gardens is an oasis of nature in the middle of the city. This park is located very close to KL Sentral and provides ample space for activities — running and group fitness sessions, wedding photos, children’s playgrounds plus the popular bird park and orchid park. The Botanical Gardens is also home to the Islamic Arts Museum, the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia.

2. Malaysia Heritage Walk
Malaysia Heritage Walk is a must for history and culture buffs. Starting from Central Market, you will hear tales of Chinese and Indian migrants who shaped the city. It’s a long stroll around Chinatown and its temples. The walk is especially appealing for individuals wanting a taste of the local cuisine. Tours can be booked in advance and last for four hours.

3. Bukit Kiara Park
Bukit Kiara, considered the green lung of KL, is the best place for avid hikers and bikers. There a various jungle treks you can venture on, while the 5km jogging trail is well-known but not that busy. The hill trail is a mighty test for the first-timer and is definitely worth the effort. You can also enjoy the 2km circuit featuring waterfalls and lush surroundings. Bukit Kiara is also the number one spot for mountain biking in KL.

4. KL Forest Eco Park
Believe it or not, there’s an entire rainforest within the boundaries of KL. KL Forest Eco Park, formerly Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve, is situated at the base of KL Tower and is the only remaining tropical rainforest within the city limits. The park has been a forest reserve since 1906 and features a 200m canopy walk providing stunning views of the trees and cityscape.
The park has both paved footpaths and natural trails and is home native birds and monkeys. Entry is free and the park is open everyday from 7am to 7pm.

Become lost in the city at Bukit Nanas Reserve
5. Dataran Merdeka Heritage Walk
For first-time visitors to KL, check out Dataran Merdeka Heritage Walk. The tour is organised by City Hall and takes the visitors to 11 different heritage sites and buildings around Merdeka Square. Most of the buildings featured are from colonial rule, with guides providing history on use, significance and architecture.
Free tours take place every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from 9am to 12.30pm and are in English. They start at KL City Gallery — formerly the Government Printing Office — and now used as an information centre. Other famous landmarks include Public Library, Kuala Lumpur Railway Station and Old City Hall.

If you have access to a car, also check out nearby places such as Broga Hill, Kanching Falls and Chilling Falls about 40 to 50 minutes out of the city. They’re perfect for hiking and exploring waterfalls — away from the hustle and bustle of the capital.
