Drift Dining and Bar has prided itself on creating amazing experiences through wine tasting events for nearly 2 years running!

We’ve taken you all around the globe and now we’re headed to one of the most southern tips on the planet — the South Island of New Zealand.

New Zealand is revered for it’s Sauvignon Blanc with Hawke’s Bay and Marlborough charting among the leading regions in the world.

Wine critic George Taber of Judgement of Paris fame once said:

“No other region in the world can match Marlborough, the northeastern corner of New Zealand's South Island, which seems to be the best place in the world to grow Sauvignon Blanc grapes”.

Of course, here at Drift, we love our Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, but we’re heading even further down New Zealand’s South Island to find another wine growing haven.

Central Otago is the world's most southerly wine region and not only the coolest wine region in the country, but according to locals, the most scenic wine region, too.

At the centre of the region is Queenstown — New Zealand’s premier tourist destination and coupled with it’s reputation as the premier Pinot Noir grower outside of France, it’s no wonder Central Otago is growing in popularity.

For centuries, the Burgundy region in France has dominated the landscape when it comes to Pinot Noir.

But now, NZ’s Central Otago is edging ever so closer, with the areas around Queenstown becoming one of the few places in the world where the pernickety Pinot Noir has thrived.

Naturally, the climate is similar to Burgundy with a continental-like climate resulting in hot days and cool nights, creating greater extremes than the country’s maritime regions.

Australian wine writer and critic James Halliday said in 2000: “This is God's Country when it comes to Pinot Noir”.

Wooing Tree Vineyard is a family owned and operated single vineyard site from the Cromwell sub-region specialising in Pinot Noir as well as Rosé, a still Blanc de Noir ‘Blondie’ and sticky Late Harvest ‘Tickled Pink’ from the same varietal.

It has gathered a remarkable following since its first vintage in 2005, winning the Open Red Wine Trophy at the Air NZ Wine Awards as well as collecting eight trophies, many gold medals, a host of 5 stars and praise from wine writers and wine lovers around the world.
