There really is no true definition to what a craft beer is, but there's a history to how a marginalised class of beer came to be known as the famous “Craft Beer.”

It all began in the 70s, when insignificant brewing companies had their beer product labeled as microbrew. A really demeaning designation. But as one wouldn't have expected the odd label didn't hold back the success of this new kind of brew.

The demand for this brew was very high, and for a good reason. Microbrew was the sort of beer that could be made without meeting any composition requirement, so beer consumers looked forward to getting something innovative and exciting in terms of its taste.

In no time, beers made by small brewers stopped being referred to as microbrews for the following reasons: The term microbrew was a legal term, and micro brewers were required by the law to produce a certain number of barrels of beer.

It was discovered soon enough that micro brewers were exceeding the required number of barrels. So it was inappropriate to keep referring to such beer products as microbrews.

Secondly, as microbrew became popular and garnered for itself loads of recognition in the United States and Europe, it just became necessary to stop referring to this brew as micro, as they now were anything but small and insignificant in brew industries around the world.

With the term “microbrew” obsolete, it was necessary to come up with a new term for this sort of brew, and a new term was conceived, “Craft Beer.”

Well, that’s the Craft Beer story, I hope you enjoyed it.

Apart from being a sensation in United States, craft beer has also gone on to be the favourite beer variety of beer lovers in such countries as Australia and Malaysia. In fact, a recent survey carried out by the Australian Beer Cartel showed that the craft beer market is the only sector of the Australian beer industry witnessing tremendous growth in spite of the decline in beer consumption within the country.

Over in Malaysia, craft beer isn’t as popular as it is in the United States, but it is indeed a force to reckon with. At the moment, the demand and market for craft beer is bubbling up in KL.

Bottom line is, craft beer is really an amazing brew with a great taste, millions of beer drinkers have decided to start drinking delicious, flavourful craft beers!
